Warning To Takeaway Owners After Hygiene Prosecution

21 Jun 2019

A takeaway owner has narrowly escaped a ban on working in the catering trade. Hygiene breaches led the oriental-style businesses in Yorkshire to twice receive 0 food safety ratings. The owner found himself in court after inspectors decided prosecutions were necessary for four hygiene offences.

He pleaded guilty to four hygiene charges and was fined £961. The business owner was also ordered to pay a £96 court surcharge and a whopping £2,500 in court costs. But things could have been even worse - the court had been asked to impose a hygiene prevention order that would have banned the man from working in the catering industry for a specified period of time. This was only avoided when he produced photographs showing a clean kitchen.

How to clean up your takeaway

In this case, environmental health inspectors discovered a ‘filthy’ commercial kitchen. Dirty surfaces and tools were found throughout, along with flies. Lack of basic cleaning and disinfection processes were also evident. CleanClad, the UK’s leading name in hygienic wall cladding for takeaways, says: “Unfortunately, this case is not unique. However, takeaway owners who continue to flout food safety legislation can expect big fines and the possibility of losing their ability to work in catering.

“We help people get a handle on hygiene and make the process of keeping surfaces hygienically clean really straightforward. In 2019, there is no need for any business to fall below expected standards. Hygienic wall cladding is affordable - it is cheaper than tiles and stainless steel - yet a rock solid way to beef up cleaning processes and stay on top of compliance.”
